Things To Look For In Carpet Cleaning Solutions

by Zachary Thompson

Rugs and carpets make the home's decor more stylish and a bit more work for the person trying to keep the home clean and healthy. You can hire a professional to do the job, or you can choose to do the deed yourself. Several methods are available including the purchase of a shampooer or renting an industrial type cleaner. A wide range of products are available over-the-counter, or you can create your own carpet cleaners. For minor stains or spots, you can use the bucket and sponge method. However, here are a few suggestions to make it easier.

Homemade Products

Many products recommend testing an area that is not in the direct eye's view to prevent any fading or changes in the carpet's texture.  If there are no changes after you apply the solution, the product is safe to use.

In emergencies, homemade products are the best resource. An excellent spot removal consists of a forth of a teaspoon of liquid detergent and one cup water. Be sure to use a detergent that doesn't contain bleach. You can use a sponge mop or rag to clean the soiled area. After the carpet dries, vacuum the residue.

Vinegar is a natural solution for cleaning carpets because it kills germs and bacteria that cause illnesses. It can also kill mold. Use white vinegar as an Eco-friendly choice that is safe for pets and children. Let the vinegar soak for a few minutes and blot the spot away using a damp rag.

Shampoo Machines

If the machine is under warranty, some manufacturers will not replace the unit unless you use a special cleaning solution as required by the specific company. If there is no warranty, vinegar is a good choice for a substitute. It is best to clean spills quickly, or the carpet may be permanently damaged.

If the cleaning machine has a tank to add solutions, you can add the vinegar undiluted. However, if the instructions state to add a specific amount of cleaning solvent to water, you can add vinegar in its place. For example, if the machine states to use four ounces of cleaning solvent, you would add four ounces of vinegar.

The main thing to remember is testing the areas to be cleaned if you are not using products specified by the manufacturer. Home remedies can save a great deal of money, but you don't want to use any products that may damage the carpet. In some cases, you must think and work quickly, or the carpet will be ruined. It is best to plan ahead and know what products will work for your cleaning needs.
