by Zachary Thompson

If you're located on the East coast, and are looking to take your family on a beach vacation, and don't want to splurge and fly to the Caribbean or California, then consider one of these  locales. They are family friendly, have lots of summer rentals available, and are located up and down the eastern seaboard. There are northern locations, as well as southern locations, so you can find one you can drive to without too much hassle.

Up North

Cape May, NJ

The Jersey shore is a beautiful place. It gets a bad rap from the eponymous TV show, but not all beach towns are wild and crazy. Perhaps the most family friendly beach town on the Jersey shore is Cape May. It's located at the very southern end of the Jersey shore. So this makes it perfect for people who are located near Baltimore, Philly, or D.C.

Cape May has big sandy beaches, lots of family friendly restaurants, and live music. There is a fun, old fashioned amusement park, as well as a zoo.

Nantucket, MA

Nantucket is a small island located outside of Massachusetts. It has lots of quiet, beautiful beaches. There are also a bunch of cool biking trails that you and your family can enjoy. You can rent bikes and bike around the island. There are lots of family friendly restaurants in the towns.

Nantucket used to be very important in the whaling industry. There are museums on the island that will showcase old boats and photos of the whaling history. A fun day trip would be to go whale watching. There are boats that take tourists out into the Atlantic Ocean. You might see humpback whales and finbacks. The prime whale migrating season is April to October, so you if you visit during the summer you stand a good chance of seeing some majestic whales up close.

Down South

Tybee Island, Georgia

Tybee Island is located south of Hilton Head Island, and not too far from Savannah. The beach is home to a number of beautiful Lighthouses, as well as museums dedicated to marine life and sea turtles, which would be a fun place to take the kids.

A great combo trip would be to spend a few days at the beach, and then visit Savannah, which is one of the South's most beautiful and culturally important cities.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

If you're looking for a big, fun, exciting beach spot, then look no further than Myrtle Beach.  It's a huge area that attracts tourists from all over the country. There are tons of attractions that your kids would enjoy, including a ferris wheel, a huge water park, an amusement park, museums, restaurants with live entertainment (pirate themed), and loads of other things.
